Lakeshore Middle School
Annual Education Report

August 23, 2011

Dear Parents and Community Members:

We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER), which provides key information on the 2010-2011 educational progress for Lakeshore Middle School.   The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and teacher quality.  If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Jason Messenger, Lakeshore Middle School Principal, for assistance.

The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting > Middle School Scores (pdf), or you may review a copy at the Lakeshore Middle School office.

For 2010-2011, Lakeshore Middle School made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in English language arts and mathematics.  We also received a grade of “A” on the Michigan School Report Card.  While we are pleased to have reached these important goals, we are continuously working to improve. We appreciate the loyal and continued support of parents, staff and our community in this effort.

State law requires that we also report additional information:

  1. ASSIGNING PUPILS TO THE SCHOOL – The Middle School houses all of the district’s 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.   Each student is assigned to a classroom, teacher, and or counselor based upon his/her age and previous school record.
  1. THE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN – A complete copy of the 3-5 year School Improvement Plan is located at > Middle School Improvement Plan (pdf)
  1. SPECIALIZED SCHOOLS – In addition to the services provided locally, approximately twenty-four (24) Lakeshore K-12 students participated in specialized county programs.  This year eleven (11) students diagnosed as moderately to severely mentally impaired attended the Blossomland Learning Center in Berrien Springs.  Thirteen (13) students participated in the Lighthouse Education Center program for the severely emotionally impaired and one (1) student attended the Hearing Impaired program in Berrien Springs.
  1. Core Curriculum – As mandated by the State of Michigan, Lakeshore Public Schools has developed a core curriculum at all school levels.  Outcomes to be achieved by all students have been defined based upon the district’s educational mission, student performance objectives, and the Michigan Grade Level Content expectations for K-8 students and the Michigan High School Content Expectations for 9-12.  Copies of core curriculum are available at all buildings and at the district office.  Recently updated curricula is posted at: http://www.lakeshoreschools.k12.mi.us/middle/curriculum.htm
  1. PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
    Attendance:
    Fall Conferences:  6th grade = 96%; 7th grade = 88%; 8th grade = 82%
    Spring Conferences:  6th grade = 31%; 7th grade – 28%; 8th grade = 22%

The information enclosed in this report is just a snapshot of the student achievement data that indicates the success we are achieving at Lakeshore Middle School.  Thank you for visiting our website. For further information please view our “Points of Pride,” where we detail many of our special programs and opportunities for students.  As ever, please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance.

Sincerely,

Jason Messenger
