The Lakeshore Mathematics and Science Center is a collaboration of consortium school districts, business and industry, and community resources. The program began in the fall of 1991 with the first freshman class. In June of 1995, the Center graduated its first class with 100% of the students accepted and enrolled in college. Students are bussed to the Center by their own school for half a day of mathematics, science, and computer science courses. Students take all remaining courses at their home high school from which they receive a diploma. The Lakeshore High School Math & Science center is open to interested students from: Galien, Lakeshore, New Buffalo, Bridgman, and River Valley School Districts. In addition, admission is also open to qualified students from private schools within the same areas. Twenty-six students are admitted to the program annually. View the Mathematics & Science Center Curriculum at the following link: CURRICULUM Math/Science Center students learn to use technology as a tool and incorporate it into their math and science work. Classes are not textbook driven, but include “hands-on” activities using cooperative learning, problem based learning, guest speakers, computer simulations and applications, and laboratory and field studies. Communication skills are stressed in student research, writing, and presentations. The emphasis in Math/Science Center classes is on understanding and using ideas, and developing critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students construct knowledge from the varied class experiences and share their knowledge and academic strengths with each other. The atmosphere of the Math/Science Center is of teachers helping students and students helping each other. Purpose Lakeshore
High School, one of the larger high schools in Berrien County with
a commitment to innovative programming, operates a wing of the school
as a dedicated math/science/technology learning center. Field Trips and Speakers 2005-2006 “Most Important Nine Months”:
