Michigan eLibrary (MeL) Databases at your School!
Teachers, students and parents can find reliable, vetted resources for classroom projects, papers and instruction in the Michigan eLibrary, http://mel.org. Using Google is fine, but using MeL resources takes the guess work out of whether a source is reliable or not. Plus, MeL resources that focus on K-12 education are structured with educators in mind. We have added some new resources this month that will be available for the next three years and are of particular interest. They include: eLibrary, CultureGrams, Opposing Viewpoints in Context. They join the continuing MeL databases specifically for K- 12: eLibrary Elementary; Kids InfoBits Infotrac Junior and Student; Gale Virtual Reference Library; SIRS Discoverer; SIRS Renaissance; and LearningExpress Library—MeL’s test and tutorials database where students can take skills building tests and courses in the core subject areas beginning in grade 4 through college including college entrance exams such as the ACT and SAT. Please check out MeL’s Kids and Teens Gateways, http://mel.org/kids and http://mel.org/teens
The Michigan eLibrary is a program of the Library of Michigan and MeL databases are made available at *no* cost to all Michigan residents through federal and state funding 24/7, so teachers, students and parents can use them from home as well. Ask your media specialist or tech director for more information on MeL, or you can go to, http://michigan.gov/mel | Stewart Elementary

Dear Parents and Other Caring Adults,
Your children come to school each day to learn. As a district, Lakeshore has adopted curriculum for each content area and each grade level based on Michigan’s outcomes. Our curriculum is posted on Lakeshore’s web page. In each classroom teachers note their learning targets for the day or week as part of their lesson plans. They focus on the most essential outcomes planning interventions for students who need extra help and extensions for students who have already mastered the skills. In addition to learning about reading, writing, math, science, social studies, music, PE, library skills, art and guidance, students learn to be citizens of our world and life-long learners. The staff at Stewart help students practice:
respect - treating others as we would like to be treated while taking care of self, others and property
creativity - using our minds to promote the arts
safety - making sure that we do our best to follow the rules to keep ourselves and others safe
courage - bravely standing up to a bully kind and courteous
behavior - being polite, caring and helpful at all times
honesty - always telling the whole truth
peace - getting along with others without conflict
integrity - to act according to what is right and wrong no matter who is watching
a love of reading - which is a skill we can use throughout our lives
problem solving - looking to take care of ourselves by thinking before acting
being great students - who come to school prepared to learn, arriving prior to 8:25 ready to be enthusiastic as we put forth our best effort being active and healthy with our bodies by exercising/playing one hour per day and limiting “screen time” to one hour per day.
By supporting positive attitudes and a quest for learning at home parents can help each child to succeed. We celebrate learning each day at Stewart.
Educationally yours,
Kathy Boyle |
